TORONTO: Goodbye, Susur
Posted by are you gonna eat that? under Eating / Food, Restaurants, Toronto | Tags: chef, New York |I thought it was an April Fool’s joke, but alas Susur Lee, one of my favourite chefs, is leaving Toronto for New York. He’ll be closing his self-titled Susur on May 31 but the more casual Lee next door will remain open.
Toronto Life reports that Susur will be opening a restaurant in a boutique hotel in Manhattan’s Lower East Side this fall, but will cook at Lee during the times he’s back in Toronto.
“A chef has to do new things, have new adventures,” Susur told the magazine.
I have fond, fond memories of my meals at Susur. Best wishes to the chef.

Lee, 603 King St. West, Toronto, (416) 504-7867.

I’ve loved reading your blog since stumbling across it a few months ago–it seems we’ve eaten at and loved many of the same restaurants (including Fleur de Sel and the spectacular Rossmount Inn). Imagine our dismay on reading about Susur’s immanent closure in the Globe and Mail. Although we often arrange our travels around food experiences, we always thought we could put off a visit to Susur because it was right in our own backyard. Missed opportunities aside, we feel like we can know you because you eat like we do: high/low and all over the culinary map. I’m sure we’ll be turning to you for food destinations in the future. Keep up the great blogging!

I heard he was leaving Toronto but didn’t realize he was closing a restaurant. That’s a shame.
