TORONTO: Sweet street meat
Posted by are you gonna eat that? under Eating / Food, Toronto | Tags: hot dog, sausage |Pitch dark midnight, downtown Toronto, and 70 km/hr winds. But the comfort of the yellow hot dog stand beckoned. I have no idea what hours these guys keep but they always seem to be there when I need them.
A few drinks with friends and suddenly I needed a spicy Italian smokie. The corners of Queen and Spadina or Front and John Streets are your best bets. These guys have been around since forever.
The wind was so unrelenting tonight, the hot dog guy opened the door to his little stand and told me to wait inside. The hot dogs and smokies were lined up on his grill, a tiny radio keeping him company.
$3 for my smokie and my favourite array of topping choices. Tonight, I left loaded with ketchup, dijon, onions, sauerkraut, pickles, relish and bacon bits. Oh heaven.
